Important Information about Yukon Driver Licensing Requirements in the United States for Commercial Operations

Drivers with a Yukon Class 5 driver’s licence operating two-axle vehicles over 10,000 lbs (4,536 kg) for commercial purposes in the US are required to meet FMCSA commercial driver medical standards.

The FMCSA requires operators of commercial motor vehicles, including two-axle heavy trucks with a gross vehicle or gross combination weight of 4,536 kg or more, to have medical certification when operating in the United States. Medical certification is required from a medical examiner on the US National Registry of Medical Examiners. Alternatively, holding a Yukon commercial driver’s licence will satisfy the FMCSA medical requirements while operating these vehicles in the United States.

If you are commercially operating a motor vehicle of this type in the United States, the FMCSA requirements will apply. To comply with the requirements, if you do not already possess a commercial class licence, you may want to consider having your Class 5 licence upgraded to a commercial class. Doing so will ensure compliance to FMCSA requirements while operating in the United States, and will avoid potential enforcement action in the United States, which may include vehicles being taken out of service by FMCSA enforcement officials.

To upgrade to a commercial class licence in Yukon, drivers are required to file a satisfactory Medical Examination Report and complete driver examinations. For more information, please contact us at 867-667-5315, or toll free within the Yukon 1-800-661-0408 ext. 5315.
