The Transitional Women's Living Unit Now Completed

The TWLU opened its doors for use November 2009. Work continues on the main correctional centre that is set to open late 2011.

The TWLU is a one-story structure of 172 m2 located on the grounds of the Whitehorse Correctional Centre.

This structure provides more adequate space for female inmates:

  • 6 sleeping rooms,
  • washrooms, and
  • living and programming space.

Once the main correctional centre is completed, female inmates will be transfered to the new women's unit in the main facility, and the TWLU building will be transfered to Health and Social Services.

TWLU staff will provide life skills programming including

  • substance abuse prevention,
  • meal preparation, and
  • the basics of personal care.

Officials from the Department of Justice and the Department of Health and Social Services are now working together to develop additional programming to assist with a healthy transition into society and avoid re-offending.
