Since the Shakwak Agreement was signed in 1977, over 1.8 billion dollars have been spent upgrading and maintaining the Alaska Highway System (an international highway) in Canada.

U.S. and Alaskan governments have accounted for 22% of expenditures on the Canadian portion of the Alaska Highway and Haines Road – US$399,554,041.

The most recent funding was provided under the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU). From 2005 to 2009, SAFETEA-LU provided $30 million per year.
This funding will cease in 2009, and future funding is required from the United States Government to fulfill obligations under the Shakwak Agreement.
Responsibility
Government of Canada for capital improvements, operation and maintenance of the south section from km 133 just north of Fort St. John, B.C., to the Yukon Border
Government of Yukon for capital improvements between the B.C./Yukon border and Haines Junction, Yukon, operation and maintenance on the entire Yukon segment of the Alaska Highway and the Haines Road
United States Government for capital improvements to the north section of the Alaska Highway from Haines Junction, Yukon, to the Alaska Border and the Haines Road
