Shakwak Accomplishments

Since the Shakwak Agreement came into effect in 1977, Yukon’s North Alaska Highway and Haines Road have undergone major improvements, with over 90% of the reconstruction work completed

Considerable work has been completed to date.

• Reconstruction completed of the entire Haines Road – 109 miles from the Alaska Border to Haines Junction.
• Reconstruction completed of the entire northern section of the Alaska Highway – 216 miles from Haines Junction to the Alaska Border.
• Pavement completed on 41 miles of the Haines Road and 4 miles of the north Alaska Highway.
• Replacement completed of 4 major bridges and a fifth is in progress.
• Construction of a major permafrost test section and instrumented on the north Alaska Highway near Beaver Creek.
