Periodical Commercial Motor Vehicle Inspection (PMVI) Program

Background & Objective

In 1988 federal, provincial, and territorial governments in consultation with the trucking industry, labour organizations, safety groups, and other interested parties began to develop these standards. In September 1991, a Memorandum of Understanding on periodic motor vehicle inspections was signed by the Council of Ministers Responsible for Transportation and Highway Safety. It addressed the lack of uniformity and reciprocity regarding manadatory periodic commercial vehicle inspection programs (PMVI) in Canada. All jurisdictions in Canada have agreed to recognize each other's PMVI inspections.

By implemeting the PMVI program, jurisdictions hope to avoid duplication of effort. The PMVI program also ensures uniformity of periodic inspections and saves the industry undue costs and delays. Moreover, it contributes to the safety of all highway users by reducing accidents due to mechanical defects on commercial vehicles.
